GIS Technician position opening at Piedmont Natural Gas in Triad area

Note: This position may be located within the following locations: Greensboro, Winston Salem or High Point.

Position Purpose:

Under direct supervision, this position is responsible for a variety of activities associated with the creation and maintenance of geospatial data related to distribution and transmission pipeline assets. The position prepares design plans, detailed drawings and enters as-built data into the appropriate systems of record. The incumbent is charged with creating and maintaining map layers using GIS, CAD and other tools as assigned.

•GIS Landbase: 83 counties in 3 states totaling over 17,000 sq. miles
•GIS Facility Records: > 3,000,000
•Scheduled Facility Inspection Records: > 180,000
•User Community: > 500 in Finance, Marketing, Operations, and Engineering departments

Nature and Scope:

This position has responsibility for ensuring that data is added to the GIS and related systems in an accurate and timely manner. These assigned systems may include, but are not limited to Smallworld GIS, GPS, AutoCAD, and related applications which may hold data and business rules for facility inspection and maintenance compliance, gas system design, sales and marketing, property tax, field workforce management, and others.

Principal Accountabilities:
•Maintain asset systems data by entering as-built data into systems of record in a timely manner, maintaining pipeline records on GIS, processing GPS data, preparing and printing detailed drawings related to permitting.
•Work on project designs by plotting routes, fitting, valves, encroachments, Right of Ways (ROW), preparing design field drawings, anode, valve drawings, and producing construction prints (as applicable).
•Provide effective customer service by supporting internal staff in their associated resource center and/or operational area, and notifying customers of future construction in the area.
•May perform related activities including but not limited to assisting in preparation of service relocation estimates, field researching to ensure accuracy of maps, assisting project managers in tasks related to position duties as needed, assisting with Emergency Response efforts (subject to assist on-call personnel as scheduled).
•Comply with all safety policies, procedures and regulations, including but not limited to utilizing personal protective equipment.
•Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned and required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Minimum Qualifications:
•Associate’s degree in GIS, Geography, Computer Science, Engineering or related technical field or equivalent work experience
•1+ year work experience in database entry and support with experience in the use of GIS and AutoCAD
•Knowledge in the use of the following systems/applications:
•Principles and practices of GIS, GPS, and cartography
•Source data used to create maps.
•Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access)
•Smallworld GIS, AutoCAD, and ArcGIS
•Demonstrated effective analytical, problem-solving, communication and interpersonal skills
•Business and technical understanding of the applications
•Ability to effectively interact with both business and technical staff
•Valid driver’s license

Desired Qualifications:
•Bachelor’s degree in GIS, Geography, Computer Science, Engineering or related technical field
•Basic knowledge of gas/pipeline operations
•Prior construction and excavation experience

Physical Requirements:
•Sedentary work exerting negligible amount of force frequently or constantly and/or up to 10 lbs. of force occasionally to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, involves sitting most of the time at a computer, but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time
•Vision acuity
•May work outdoors in adverse weather conditions, walk over rough terrain, bend and stoop, climb fences

Other Requirements:
•Occasional travel to other work locations
•Work evening or weekend hours as needed
