Job Description

Invasive plants have been a prevalent problem among the 6,000 acres of
William B. Umstead State Park. With more than 20 known species in the
park and hundreds of acres that have been impacted, we will offer a
challenging opportunity for an intern to work on the control of
invasive plants. The position combines office work with field work and
allows for independent work as well as a flexible schedule. We are
looking for a student who has completed coursework in natural sciences
and GIS. Communication and research skills are also essential to this
internship.

Responsibilities include:
 Identifying and developing prioritization of invasive plants.
Surveying these sites and utilizing GPS and GIS to record these sites.
 Research the biology of plants and appropriate control methods.
 Developing and modifying management plans for sites containing
invasive plants.
 Working to complete previously developed management plans to include
control and prevention of invasive plants. Utilizing mechanical and
chemical control methods.
 Developing educational materials on invasive plants.
 Coordinating with volunteer groups to work on projects within the park.
 Work to restore native ecosystems to include planting trees and grasses.
 Utilize GIS to manage sites and document completed control measures.
 Assist where needed with other ongoing resource management projects
within the park.

Pay: 7.25 / hour
