Description:
This is a temporary position without benefits with hours ranging from 10 – 15 during the school year and up to 40 per week during summer break.
The rain catcher intern is a temporary, grant-funded position for a graduate student in support of the Rain Catchers project. Through Rain Catchers, the City of Durham will install 230 low impact development residential retrofits in a small sub watershed of Ellerbe Creek and measure the results. Practices will include rain gardens, cisterns, native plantings, trees, and downspout disconnections. Participating homeowners will be selected through a reverse auction style process. The intern will have an opportunity to work on most aspects of the project and will have several masters’ project options.

Work includes preparing promotional materials and mailings to recruit participants; designing a process for and conducting site assessments using GIS and field visits; creating a database to track retrofits; assisting with water quality monitoring; analyzing water quality monitoring data; inspecting retrofits and facilitating maintenance; creating an owner’s manual for each retrofit; and other duties to support the successful implementation of Rain Catchers. Field work will take place in varied weather conditions and rough terrain.
Requirements:
Undergraduate degree in environmental science, forestry, biology, engineering, or a related field.
Actively pursuing a graduate degree in an environmental, biology, forestry, planning, or engineering program
Ability to use ArcGIS and the Microsoft Office suite preferred.
Excellent written and oral communication skills preferred.
Individuals selected for conditional offers of employment must pass the City of Durham physical examination including drug and alcohol testing.
