My name is Tyler. I am local to Raleigh and studied at NCSU in the past.
I am interested finding a teacher or top of the class student to consult me on some GIS mapping that I am doing for work projects (As soon as possible).
I have been using both Delorme Xmap and ArcGIS for these projects and I am looking to consult with someone who could help answer some simple questions and streamline my mapping process. For this project I will be primarily using ArcGIS. These particular maps involve land ownership and land use. I may be interested in working with someone who could develop applications that are compatible with mobile (tablet) pc’s so that I can make map, database, and document updates from the mobile (tablet) pc, while working in the field. I could pay someone for consulting if needed. My questions may keep someone busy for 3 hours.

TEMPORARY EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY

The Injury and Violence Prevention Branch (IVPB) seeks a temporary employee (24 hours per week) to perform an evaluation of the Get Alarmed, North Carolina Residential Fire Safety Program. Get Alarmed, North Carolina! will be conducting a formal evaluation on the Get Alarmed, North Carolina! program for the 2001-2011 time period. Fire departments and agencies currently under contract are required to report any fires and lives saved at homes that had a smoke alarm installed. Departments that are currently not under contract are not obligated to report fires, thus the program believes there are many more lives saved than we have currently reported. A part time evaluator is needed to collect and analyze data using the National Fire Incident Reporting System database, a system used by U.S. fire departments to report fires and other incidents in a uniform matter. This position will also conduct key informant interviews and use Geomapping to overlap installed alarms with lives saved. This position will prepare a final evaluation report on the effectiveness of this program. This temporary position will begin as soon as the position is filled and continue at for up to 24 weeks. The IVPB will provide a work space, computer, phone and access to a state vehicle for travel (outside of Wake County). The IVPB expects the employee to work on-site in the Raleigh office except when job duties require work elsewhere, however, alternative working arrangements can be made if necessitated by the project or mutually agreed upon by both parties.

Salary range/hours: $25 – $30/hour depending on experience

Qualifications

Required:
Minimum Master’s student in public health or related field and three years of evaluation experience
Quantitative research skills including:
Primary and secondary data analysis
Use of statistical software such as SAS
Use of Geomapping software ArcView

Qualitative research skills, including:
Focus group, recruitment, implementation, and data analysis
Excellent written skills
Experience conducting literature searches
Experience developing basic evaluation tools
Flexibility and the ability to adapt to project needs
Independent, self-motivated worker
Has own transportation (car) for use to carry out job tasks within Wake County.
Proficiency with MS Office particularly Excel and SAS, SPSS or comparable statistical software.

Preferred:
Ph.D graduate student strongly preferred
At least five years of prior evaluation experience

Tar River Land Conservancy (TRLC) seeks applications for a 12-week internship during the summer of 2012. This internship will provide extensive exposure to and hands on experience with a regionally-based land trust. TRLC preserves the natural and cultural resources of the Upper Tar River Basin by working in partnership with private landowners, businesses, public agencies, and others to protect rural landscapes and riparian corridors. Harboring sixteen rare and endangered species, the Upper Tar is one of the most ecologically important watersheds of the eastern seaboard. Since the TRLC was founded in 2000, we have protected 16,926 acres of land.

PRIMARY DUTIES OF INTERNSHIP:
1. Conduct onsite inspections of properties, including those with conservation easements and TRLC fee owned properties.
2. Assist staff with all preparatory and follow up tasks related to easement and property inspections, including maintenance of files and photographic records, updating protected lands database, updating stewardship database and preparing property inspection reports.
3. Assist in the management and organization of TRLC land protection and stewardship files in accordance with its Records Policy.
4. Conduct basic GIS analysis and prepare maps, spreadsheets, and draft reports.
5. Collect field data on properties targeted for protection to evaluate natural, recreational and cultural resources on tracts.
6. Perform other tasks related to land stewardship and land management as required.
7. Assist with other appropriate projects as assigned.
8. Travel extensively throughout the 8-county watershed (Person, Granville, Franklin, Vance, Warren, Halifax, Nash and Edgecombe Counties) to perform these duties.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
1. Commitment to the mission of the TRLC to conserve private working landscapes and significant natural and cultural resources using conservation easements and other tools.
2. Completion of or progress towards a degree in natural resources management, forestry, agriculture, wildlife management or related discipline.
3. Excellent writing, organizational and record keeping skills.
4. Proficiency using ESRI ArcGIS and MS Word, Outlook, and Excel.
5. Ability to work outdoors in the summer heat and humidity and in rugged conditions using compass, maps, GPS equipment and carrying field equipment.
6. Ability to function productively as both a member of a work team and independently.
7. Ability to work effectively to meet deadlines.

DESCRIPTION
Internship Name: Management plan creation for TNC Big Yellow Mountain Preserve & State Park natural resource management (Shared Intern with TNC and Yellow Mtn State Natural Area)

Description and Responsibilities: The intern will create a new comprehensive management plan for a 425-acre TNC preserve that the Conservancy has owned since the 1970’s and manages jointly with the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy. This setting is unique because this preserve contains upwards of 80 acres of grassy bald natural community – a rare and unusual community type that is of global ecological significance—and which has been continuously managed since European settlement by livestock grazing. The intern will compile all historical documents regarding management on the preserve, assess stakeholder interests and the current condition of conservation targets, and create draft recommendations for future management. For State Parks, the intern will assist in natural resource management one day per week, with specific tasks to be determined. State Parks work site will be primarily the new Yellow Mountain State Natural Area and/or Grandfather Mountain State Park-either in the field or based at State Parks local office, with some work done in TNC’s Asheville and/or Boone offices.

Qualifications: Natural Resource Management/Conservation Biology educational and/or professional background; GIS mapping ability; familiarity with GPS units and their use in the field; and excellent organization skills. Exemplary written and verbal communication a must. Intern must have own vehicle (no travel compensation), and be willing to work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances. Intern must have own laptop available for use, preferably with ArcGIS license (although not required)

Getting ready to graduate, going to school part time or just graduated? Need help getting experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS)? The North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has two paid internships available in downtown Raleigh.

Work: Internships will work with ArcMap 10, google maps and other GIS technologies. Work will focus on improving the spatial coordinates and perform quality control (QC) on several energy data layers that have been geocoded (address matched). Datasets to QC including Gas Stations, Liquid Propane, gas distribution pipelines, bulk gas storage, grocery stores and other related datasets. There is very limited field work or ground proofing in the project but a valid driver’s license is required.

Experience: No experience with GIS is required but all candidates will have to demonstrate an interest in learning geospatial technologies. Ideal candidates would have at least one GIS course and be in a related field of study (geography, natural resources, agriculture, forestry, information technology, planning, architecture or, engineering). Experience in geocoding and/or editing in ArcMap is a plus but not required.

Hours: This internship can pay up to 40 hours a week but there is a minimum requirement of 25 hours a week. The schedule is flexible but all hours need to be worked in the office and during the hours of 7:30-5:00.

Duration: Internships can start as early as August 29th or two weeks after applications are received and interviews are conducted. All internships will end February 29th, 2012.

Dress code: Business casual dress required; that means no shorts, no tee-shirts, no flip flops, no tie, no suit and jeans on Fridays.

Pay: Pay is based on experience and education but hourly rates are expected to be in the $10-$14/hour range. Final hourly compensation will be determined and approved by Human Resources.
